SAINTS OF THE WEEK

Monday, August 14th - St. Maximilian Kolbe, Priest and Martyr

St. Maximilian Kolbe, born in 1894, in Poland was a Franciscan priest who was completely dedicated to Our Lady. He died in 1941 in the Auschwitz concentration camp, having voluntarily taken the place of a prisoner who was condemned to death. He is the patron saint of drug addicts and prisoners.

Tuesday, August 15th - The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

On this day, we celebrate that Our Lady, the Blessed Virgin Mary, at the end of her earthly life was assumed, or taken up, into heaven, body and soul. God granted her this special privilege because of her sinlessness and her fullness of grace. Through all the sorrows that Mary faced during her life as the mother of Jesus she always maintained unwavering faith in God’s promises given to her through the angel.

Wednesday, August 16th - Saint Stephen of Hungary

Stephen was crowned King of Hungary in 1001 by Pope Sylvester II who had a special crown fashioned for Stephen that has since become world famous. Stephen strengthened the Church in Hungary by establishing monasteries and proclaiming Christianity the official Religion. Stephen regarded faith in God to be the most important way to honor his royal crown. Stephen is the patron saint of bricklayers and Hungary.

Thursday, August 17th - Saint Joan of the Cross

Born in 1666, in France, Joan worked in her family’s business from an early age. She was called greedy and insensitive to the poor, but her heart was softened one day when she met a strange woman who claimed to be on intimate terms with God. After their meeting, Joan began caring for needy children, the poor, elderly, and sick. By the time of her death in 1736 she had founded 12 religious houses, hospices, and

schools. She was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1982.

Friday, August 18th - Saint Louis of Toulouse

Louis was born into royalty in 1274, and as a child he used to take food from the castle to feed the poor. Louis renounced the throne, and became a Franciscan priest, eventually being named a bishop. The Franciscan spirit was evidenced in Louis’ famous saying: “Jesus Christ is all my riches; he alone is sufficient for me.” Louis died in 1297 at age 23.
