Saints of the Week

Monday, August 21st - St. Pius X

Joseph Sarto was born in Italy in 1835 and elected pope in 1903. He took the name Pius X. He is most remembered for his encouragement of frequent reception of Holy Communion. He declared that children reached the “age of reason” at 7 years old and could therefore receive Holy Communion at that age. He died in 1914 right after the beginning of World War I.

Tuesday, August 22nd - The Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Today we celebrate the feast of the Queenship of Mary. This feast of Mary recognizes her role in the Kingdom of her Son, Jesus. If Jesus is king, Mary is certainly queen. The title goes back centuries in the Church, as Mary has been praised for her position in the Church and among the people of God.

Wednesday, August 23rd - Saint Rose of Lima

Born in 1586, St. Rose of Lima became the first canonized saint of the New World. Rose’s love of God was great. She was afraid her beauty, which was often admired, would endanger her relationship with God. To keep her humble, Rose used to rub her face with pepper to produce disfiguring blotches. She lived a life of solitude and penance as a member of the Third Order of St. Dominic. She died in 1617.
She is the patron saint of Peru and the Americas.

Thursday, August 24th - St. Bartholomew

Bartholomew lived in the First Century and is one of Jesus’ original twelve apostles. Some scholars also identify him as Nathanael, a man of whom whom Jesus said contained no duplicity. Bartholomew was one of those to whom Jesus appeared on the shore of the Sea of Tiberias after his resurrection. Bartholomew is the patron saint of plasterers.

Friday, August 25th - Saint Louis of France

At his coronation as king of France, Louis bound himself by oath to behave as God’s anointed. He was devoted to his people, founding hospitals, visiting the sick, and caring for people with leprosy. Louis united France by the force of his personality and holiness. For many years the nation was at peace. Louis was born in 1214 and died in 1270. He is the patron saint of barbers.
